David Andrew was born in Redruth, trained at the Falmouth School of Art and then at the Slade School in London from 1958-9. At that time he was greatly influenced by Ben Nicholson and Piet Mondrian and it was also then that he first became interested in the psychology of perception. Following his student days, Andrew taught at the Bournemouth and Portsmouth Colleges of Art, spending his summers travelling and painting in the stronger light of the Mediterranean and around the coasts of the USA and Canada in a recreational vehicle he transformed into a mobile studio. A further teaching post at Queens University, Canada, followed in 1971 and he remained Associate Professor until 1995. In 2004 Andrew returned to Cornwall and now lives and works in Mousehole.
